George Washington’s Distillery & Gristmill

Built-in 1799, it was during its time of the largest whiskey distilleries in America and it was owned by a then 65-year-old George Washington. Instead of retiring, he collaborated with a close friend due to the abundance of crops, combined with the state-of-the-art gristmill and abundant water supply in making whiskey out of rye.

Another awesome reconstructed piece of history made operationally is the gristmill. It’s fully operational, and it runs to demonstrate the corn milling process. It is an amazing mechanical marvel that helped make George Washington one of the richest men in colonial America. There is also a gift shop and yes, you can buy booze and some ingredients for making booze.



Ford Orientation Center – George Washington’s Mount Vernon

Prepare yourself here before you visit this attraction near Pohick Church, because once you exit the building it feels like you are traveling back in time. This is a historic house tour for your introduction to George Washington. The orientation center is an interesting museum with exhibits to help illustrate the life and times of Washington. The inn has good period foods and the farm brings a time-machine feel with its surroundings.
